About

At the heart of live music, there’s connection — and that’s what Crowdbuilder is all about.
Since 2017, Live DMA, the European network for live music associations, has been bringing together passionate professionals through a dedicated Working Group on Audience Development.
Between 2022 and 2024, 17 live music venues from across Europe joined forces to dive deep into the challenges and opportunities of building and nurturing audiences in small and medium-sized venues.
Driven by a shared desire to reflect on their practices, learn from each other, and contribute to something bigger than themselves, these venues collaborated on a project grounded in care, creativity, and community.
Crowdbuilder is the fruit of that collective journey — a tool built by the scene, for the scene.

2017

Shared Visions

Rennes, France

Music venue representatives from across Europe came together, exchanging stories of how they grow their audiences, as audience development remains a shared, central focus for music venues.

2018

A New Theory

Granada, Spain

Their talks sparked a tool based on this theory: a concert blends art, audience, and setting – and changing one of these parameters transforms the whole experience!

2022

Putting It to Test

Bilbao, Spain

To test the theory and refine the tool, several music venues joined a two-year working group.

2023

Ideas in Motion

Lyon, France

They shared ideas, compared differences, and found common ground to enhance the tool.

2023

Shaping the Tool

Helsinki, Finland

Together, they crafted and perfected the tool, making it valuable for concert organisers across Europe.

2024

Crowdbuilder is Born

Dresden, Germany

That’s how they created Crowdbuilder, a powerful tool for music venues to grow audiences and build community. Now, they invite you to embark on the same journey of collaboration, experimentation and discovery…

About Live DMA

Live DMA is a European network of national live music associations, created in 2012. Through our members, we support a vibrant community of over 3,000 live music venues, clubs, and festivals across 16 countries. Our mission is to strengthen the live music sector through cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and capacity-building.

We created Crowdbuilder to help venues grow and connect with their audiences — a practical tool born from collective experience and designed to support the cultural, social, and artistic value of live music scenes.

Do you have any questions?

Browse our Frequently Asked Questions section: the answer might be there! If you can’t find it, feel free to contact us, we will be happy to answer!

Is Crowdbuilder made for me?

Absolutely — if you’re part of a live music venue, club, or organisation looking to grow your audience and strengthen your community, Crowdbuilder is for you.
You’ll work with a playful, fill-in-the-gaps format covering six key topics essential for audience and community development. It’s not about having the right answers — it’s about sparking conversations, shifting perspectives, and building a shared vision with your team.
Originally created by and for live music venues, this collaborative tool can also help any cultural or artistic organisation rethink how they engage with their communities. Whether you’re running a club, venue, a creative space, or part of an artistic collective,  Crowdbuilder helps you and your team reflect, strategise, and grow your audience together.
More than just a tool, Crowdbuilder is an invitation to collaborate, explore, and imagine new ways of connecting with your crowd — together.

How long does it take to complete Crowdbuilder?

We recommend setting aside about two hours for a full session with your team. That said, Crowdbuilder is flexible: you can explore it at your own pace, split it into shorter sessions, or focus on specific sections depending on your needs. There’s no rush: take the time you need to reflect and collaborate meaningfully.

To help keep things on track, we suggest nominating a game master: someone who can guide the group, monitor time, and make sure everyone stays engaged.

Do I need any special skills or training to use Crowdbuilder?

Not at all! Crowdbuilder is designed to be accessible to everyone: no special knowledge or facilitation skills required. All you need is a team, a bit of curiosity, and a willingness to think together. If you’d like, you can appoint someone as a “game master” to guide the process, but it’s optional and easy to do.

The website will also be available in several languages to make it easier for teams across Europe to use, and more translations are on the way! If your language isn’t available yet, feel free to contact us or follow Live DMA on social media to stay updated when new versions are released.

What kind of outcomes can I expect from using Crowdbuilder?

By the end of your session, you’ll have a clearer strategy for growing your audience and strengthening your community. You’ll also gain shared insights, identify areas for change, and open up important conversations with your team. It’s not about ticking boxes:  it’s about building a common vision for your venue’s role in the lives of your audience.

Can we use Crowdbuilder more than once?

Absolutely! Crowdbuilder is designed to be reusable and adaptable. You can revisit it each season, or return to it whenever you’re facing change or want to spark new ideas. It’s also a great tool to use again when you’re working on a new audience target, serving as both a starting point and a check-in tool for ongoing development.

Does Crowdbuilder collect or store any data?

No. We do not collect, track, or store any data. Everything you write down stays with you and your team. It’s up to you to make sure you download the PDF with your results at the end of the exercise. Your reflections, strategies, and discussions are entirely yours.

Can I save my work and come back to it later?

Absolutely! Crowdbuilder lets you save your progress and return to it anytime using a personal link sent directly to your email.

Do I need to create an account or sign in to use Crowdbuilder?

No sign-up needed! Crowdbuilder is completely free and open-access. You can use the tool directly from the website, and download any materials you need. No accounts, no passwords: just dive in and start building your crowd.

I have feedback, ideas, or want to get involved — how can I contribute to Crowdbuilder?

We’d love to hear from you! Crowdbuilder is a living, evolving tool, and your input helps us make it better. Whether you have suggestions for improvement, want to help translate the tool into your language, have ideas to make it more accessible, or would like to share a testimony about your experience using the tool, don’t hesitate to reach out.

You can contact us via the form on the website or through Live DMA’s social media channels.
